DIY blogger Marisa from the Neon Tea Party shows us how to make these embellished jeans for a one-of-a-kind look.

What you need

What you need

  • Boyfriend-style jeans
  • Embroidery floss in a variety of colors
  • Pompom trim
  • Thread to match pompom trim
  • Pins
  • Embroidery needle
  • Sewing needle
  • Scissors

Let's Get Started

Step 1

The first step is to embroider a pattern of thick stripes along the tops of the front pockets of your jeans. Before doing so, plan out your color pattern.

Step 2

Start with the color closest to the waistband of your jeans. Thread a length of embroidery floss through your embroidery needle and knot both ends together.

Step 3

Start embroidering through the bottom stitch of the pocket.

Step 4

Wrap the embroidery floss over the top of the pocket and feed the needle back through the bottom stitch of the pocket. Continue wrapping until you are happy with the width of your color block.

Step 5

End the color block by knotting the embroidery floss on the inside of the pocket. Trim excess thread.

Step 6

Repeat the process with your other colors to create a color-blocked pattern of your choice. Tip: Uneven widths make the effect look more casual.

Step 7

When you’re done, repeat the pattern (or create a new one!) on the other front pocket.

Step 8

The next step is to attach your pompom trim down sides of each pant leg. Pin the trim along the seams of your jeans to keep it in place.

Step 9

Thread your sewing needle with matching thread and hand sew the trim down the pant leg with a running stitch. Be sure to adjust the trim as needed to keep it nice and centered over the pant seams.

Step 10

Snip the excess trim off the top and bottom of each leg, and you’re all set!
