How to Make Laundry Day Easier

What Do Laundry Symbols Mean Care Tips Washing Garments

We’ve all been there. It’s time to wash your favorite garment or sheets for the first time, so you look for the care instructions in the interior tag. Sometimes this task is simple and clear, and other times, there are 10 different tags (why so many!), multiple languages and 5+ symbols and you have no idea what they really mean.

Not surprising, there’s an app for that! It’s called Laundry Day, and allows users to decode the confusing labels through a quick snap of their phone. By translating these symbols, you are quickly given instructions on what to do, or not do, with each specific garment.

Another way to avoid confusion? Opt for buying more cotton! The synthetic threads that make up mystery fabrics are usually what needs all of the decoding. When you check the label and purchase a cotton garment, maintaining it becomes a whole lot easier.

Unlike oil-based synthetic fabrics like polyester, cotton is able to breathe and doesn’t retain odor, allowing for a better work out, easier wear in the warmer months, and because your skin is breathing your clothes won’t absorb an unpleasant smell as quickly and doesn’t need to be washed as often. Bonus tip: when you check the labels on workout gear look for treatment options like “odor controlling” or “odor absorbing”. These treatments help deter pesky micro-organisms to hang out on your clothes.

While balls of tangled fibers will pop up on most clothes, unlike polyester and synthetic blends, cotton pills are not permanent and sheds once washed.

There is sometimes too much of a good thing. Using too much detergent on your garments actually speeds up the wear and tear of your clothes.

Getting wrinkles out of cotton is really easy, and one of the reasons it makes for the perfect travel item. Even if you don’t have (or want to use) a steamer or iron, you can smooth out wrinkles by 1-hang in bathroom while taking a steamy shower, or 2-misting garment with water and using a blow dryer to steam the wrinkles right out.
